Road race via Tesco and various updates - 29-06-2009

Well done to those who helped marshall the road race at Edenbridge.  Rumourmill has learnt that Steve Rivett driving lead car two went off course and headed into Tesco.  Luckily it was the 3rd lap and the riders knew where they were going!!!! Steve was driving lead car 2 and ended up as lead car 3 thanks to his detour.  Woolwich cc only supplied 3 helpers leaving the team well short of marshalls but the race went ok.  Mark Beckett was lead car 1 and thought he was Cristian Preudhomme....directeur sportif of the tour de france....It was Terry's birthday so he positioned myself on a corner outside a pub.....well you have to look after number 1 sometimes....

Mark "valverde" Beckett and Terry have raced twice at hogs hill this month.  Terry has also raced at the Foulmead
circuit at deal and done a few Crystal Palace Tuesday nights, with very mixed results. Its hard against the young testosterone filled
youngsters when all you have is a bit of viagra......and a bus pass.

On Saturday, Chris Gould rode the Herts Wheelers '10' on the F20 in a thunderstorm and sent in this report

Despite the conditions I simply had to ride as it was a middlemarkers event and this was my chance to record a good PB to get entries to other Saturday afternoon events on the E2. I was confident of a 22 but knew I had an outside chance of challenging my all time PB of 21:52 from 1991.

The ride went perfectly. I had all the right pain signals (i.e. lots and lots of it) and maintained a lovely rhythm. It was the first ride since my comeback where I cannot imagine where I could have gone even 1 second faster. As the finish line approached, I noted that there was a 1 foot wide kerb separating the main carriageway from the lay-by. The finish is at the end of the lay-by. It suddenly hit me, 'is the finish in the lay-by or on the carriageway?'

A split second decision was to take to the lay-by, reasoning that if this was incorrect I at least could not claim to have taken advantage. This proved to be the wrong choice. I should have finished on the carriageway. My time was recorded but not allowed to stand. For the record, my time was 21:09. To erase the pain, my target for the year has been amended to 21:08.
