Vets Road Race - From Laurie - 01-10-2008A warm and sunny, late September morning greeted the two protaganists for the Club Vets. Road Race last Sunday (28th) at the Redbridge Cycling Facility (also known as Hog Hill). At the sign-on we were told we would be on the lower circuit, which is rather flat and open. After a few laps of the smooth tarmac for a warm-up we gathered at the line for a quick briefing and the start. About 40 riders in all, with the over 60's at the back. Good luck messages were exchanged through gritted teeth, and then we were off, 1 hour and 5 laps to go. The pace was fairly brisk from the start and the bunch stayed together for a few laps. A small group went for a break-away with Terry Sowa (51.5 years young) in it. Nothing came of it, and they were soon reeled back in to the chasing pack. Laurie Toombs (46.3 years even younger) chased a bit for the days first Prime, much to the delight of Terry, but realising it was pointless and a waste of energy Laurie soon backed off. During the first hour, the West Kenters kept an eye on each other looking for signs of weakness, but despite the relentless speed of the race, both maintained good position in the pack. Laurie found himself in with a chance of the final Prime, but missed out by a bike length at the line. He and the Prime winner stayed clear for a couple of laps, but were eventually caught. Time flies when you are having fun, and before we knew it the 5 lap board was up. By the time it got to 2 laps to go, the race was really on. The speed had increased considerably with everyone fighting for position. Experience was beginning to show, and Terry was stuck to Laurie's wheel, determined not to let him get away and able to cover any moves. On the last corner, Terry made his move. Laurie stayed left, Terry went right and got caught up behind two riders who decided a 20 metre sprint was enough for them. Bellowing like a raging bull, Terry got past them, but the damage was done. Laurie dived through a gap and just about held Terry's spirited challenge off, to take the WKRC Vets. road race trophy by a wheel. A good performance by both, getting the West Kent jerseys over the line in 7th and 8th place overall. The circuit is an excellent facility for all standards of cyclists and completely traffic free. Only 30 minutes from the Dartford crossing down the A127/A13/A112. £3.50 gets you a days riding so get training for both the Road Race trophies in 2009. more news articles... | Upcoming events23-11-2008 |
