Club run report June 27 - 27-06-2010
Venue: Hilden |Golf Club.
Bit of a laugh really as I turned up with a route for the Isle of Grain ride.
About 14 riders turned up at the meeting point with Jim and Gordon deciding to do other than go to the golf course.
Those I recall as being at the meeting point were: Myself, Andrew from Otford, Steve, Dave, Gary Stewart, Mark M, Phil, Alex, Mick, Simon, Mack, Gordon, Jim, the chap with the Mountain bike (Ed’s apologies here for not remembering a name) and Len our eldest rider on the day at 79..
So it was off via Eynsford and past the visitor centre, the base of Polhill and Pilgrims to Brasted and later onto Toys Hill and Four Elms. Bearing in mind that the forecast was for 27 degrees plus we elected to go straight to the café from Four Elms.
Phil blew his nose soon after and I’m sure my front wheel caught it as it thereafter felt out of balance.
On approaching Chiddingstone Causeway some small minded person decided to throw water over myself and Phil as they drove past but to top that some silly person in a ‘white van’ decided to overtake the group with their horn blaring but we managed not to give the driver any verbal other than ‘shut up’ and ‘get a life’.
Whilst we were in the café Alan Brown turned up with his cousin Brian Dacey, Brian-good to see you out and about.
Dear old Len who was initially going to Westerham turned up as he thought that the golf club wasn’t that much further and he didn’t wanted to be branded as a ‘79 year old wimp’.
Andrew told us tales of his experiences as a horse back mounted police officer and Alex spoke of the time a fellow officer who was on his way into work on a motorbike was confronted by a robber and threatened. The officer skidded into the station yard and called out for someone to jump on and call for assistance. So there was Alex without a hat and little if any protection riding pillion to get this guy. A police car headed the guy off and an arrest made.
On going to our bikes we got into conversation with a women’s only cycling club of which we had seen many of them out and about over the past weeks. They have adopted the golf club as their H.Q.
So it was home via Igtham Moat, Ivy Hatch, Seal-where Mark M punctured, Kemsing and ‘easy hill’ -our nickname for the hill leading from the railway bridge towards Eynsford-which some of at least ascended faster than the runs average speed.
Thence the usual run to the Orange Tree pub and riders going every which way.
Mark, sorry some of us didn’t wait re the puncture. Must have been scared of you winning the Eynsford prime.
Ed
