As the warmer weather approaches (I have to have hope!) attention turns to club runs and how best to manage them. It is generally accepted that change is necessary, so no need to use this forum to go on the offensive, just use it constructively...

Club run guidelines - 11-11-2009

Dear WKRC Members

With the increase in members attending club runs it was felt that it would be useful to come up with some suggested guidelines to ensure both safety and enjoyment for all on our club runs. The issue of club runs was opened up for discussion at this week’s club night and members also had the opportunity to e-mail any thoughts in advance. The following was suggested and it is hoped that these suggestions are agreeable to all and can be put into practice straight away.

§ It was agreed that Sundays should be a club run. There should be a faster group and the “Holman Hustlers” group. The faster group should avoid too many sprints and attacks on hills and ride together at a steady fast pace. Saturdays and mid-week rides were suggested as potential training rides for those keen on racing and time-trialling. If you are interested in training rides, then please send your details to Claire Hitchings
§ Groups – The social “Holman Hustlers” group to remain. It was felt that groups should be no more than 10 as any more causes problems for drivers over-taking, etc. So when there are more than 10 riders, the “faster” group should split into a fast and intermediate group.
§ Leaving the Birchwood Club – The logical order would be the fast, then the intermediate and then the social group with a few minutes in between. It would be good if riders can make it clear which group they wish to ride with.
§ Club kit – Wearing to be encouraged.
§ ID – To be carried containing vital lifesaving information to paramedics in the event you are involved in an accident or suffer a medical incident when cycling.
§ Leaders – Be good for people to volunteer for this role rather than leaving it to the useful faithful.
§ The route – Helpful for leaders to explain the route to the group before leaving.
§ Sweepers - Groups should also designate a “sweeper” so that no one gets lost. Alternatively, riders to buddy up.
§ New-comers – Keen to ensure that as we advertise ourselves as a friendly club then new riders are welcomed and educated/tutored on riding etiquette and not left behind. Take a phone number for any new riders.
§ Winter riding – To avoid narrow leafy lanes or routes known to be particularly icy.
§ Cycling etiquette – To ensure that we don’t give cyclists a bad name and remain safe – keep to riding two abreast, avoid half-wheeling, use the signs for pot-holes, parked cars and other potential hazards and when someone calls “Oil” to get in single file as soon as is safe to do so.
§ Getting off the road – If stopping (e.g., for a puncture), then make sure all riders stop in a safe place and get off the road.
§ Etiquette to leaders – If somebody is leading a ride, then please respect their choice of route. If you don’t like a route, then please volunteer to lead the next ride.

Hopefully the above will help to ensure Happy WKRC Riding!
