A good weekend for team Hitchings - 02-08-2010
Claire Hitchings won the ladies race at the Medway triathlon - her first triathlon since taking a silver medal at the European championships in Athlone. Claire's time was good enough for fourth overall with just three men faster on the day. Claire came back with amusing tales of swimming in lanes that were ever so slightly too narrow, other competitors who seemed keener to chat rather than race and a bike course on country lanes with plenty of ups and downs. Claire's work was over in one hour and eight minutes. Next weekend, Claire will be taking on her first 50 mile time trial. Clearly Anthony's tales of aching limbs and sore thighs after his 50 have not been enough to put her off.
On the time trial front, this weekend was the Hewitt cup clash brought forward from the usual September slot. Four West Kenters had signed up for the race which may be a record for the Hewitt cup in recent years. Graham Hines was a no show which left Peter Thomas, Anthony Hitchings and Lee Russell to battle it our for honours on the Q25/8 course on the A28 near Canterbury and Ashford. This course has a fair share of lumps and bumps and includes a leg with some 6 to 7 miles of steady climbing before a final section which is mainly downhill. Scores on the doors were (and times are what I can remember off the top of my head):
Anthony 1 hr 29 seconds
Peter 1 hr 1 minute 15 seconds
Lee 1 hr 3 minutes 30 seconds
Finally all that Winter turbo work starts to pay off for team Hitchings (not in our garage in case you are wondering)
